Online Ordering
Your Menu Photos Are a Sales Tool. Treat Them Like One.
Nobody orders food they can't picture. That's always been true. The difference now is that the picture has to exist on a screen, in an app, in under three seconds, before a customer swipes to the next option.
If your menu has no photos, you're asking people to order on faith. Most won't.
The numbers
The 2026 DoorDash and SevenRooms Restaurant Trends Report is direct on this. 87% of consumers have chosen what to order on a delivery app based on seeing an appealing photo. 91% say a new item they tried had a photo at least some of the time.
On DoorDash specifically, reaching 50% photo coverage across your menu increases sales by 13% on average. That's internal platform data from real merchants, not a projection.
Photos don't just help customers decide what to order. They help customers decide to order from you at all. A listing with no photos reads as neglected. A listing with real, appetizing photos reads as a restaurant that gives a damn.
What "good enough" actually looks like
You don't need a food photographer. You need a phone, a window, and fifteen minutes.
Natural light is everything. Take the photo near a window during the day. Put the food on a clean plate. Shoot from directly above or at a 45-degree angle. Don't use the flash. Take ten shots and use the best one.
That's it. Not perfect. Not editorial. Just real food that looks like real food, lit well enough that someone scrolling at 9pm thinks "I want that."
Where to start
Your top ten sellers. Those are the items most likely to convert a browser into a buyer, and right now they might be the items with the worst photos or no photos at all. Fix those first.
Then work down the menu until you hit 50% coverage. After that, every additional photo is incremental. Keep going when you have time.
The competitive reality
Most independent operators have inconsistent or missing photos. The ones who fix it stand out immediately. The app doesn't care how good your food actually is. It shows customers what you show it.
Give it something to work with.
