AI Search Is Changing How Customers Find Restaurants. Here's What to Do About It.
A customer opens ChatGPT on their phone and types "best Italian spot near me for a date night." They're not Googling. They're not opening Yelp. They're asking an AI, and the AI is going to give them three to five options with enough detail to make a decision.
Is your restaurant one of them?
This is already happening
The 2026 DoorDash and SevenRooms Restaurant Trends Report surveyed over 3,000 consumers and found that 22% have already used an AI tool like ChatGPT or Google Gemini to help choose a restaurant. That number is going up, not down.
What those AI tools pull from matters. Research from Yext found that restaurant listing sites like DoorDash make up over 41% of the sources AI tools cite when recommending restaurants. Your own website accounts for another significant share.
Which means two things have to be true for AI to find you and recommend you. Your listing on third-party platforms has to be complete, accurate, and detailed. And your own website has to be optimized well enough to show up as a credible source.
Why this is different from regular SEO
Traditional search shows a list of links. AI search gives a direct answer. If your restaurant isn't in the answer, you don't get a second chance on that query. The customer doesn't scroll down to find you. They book the place the AI mentioned.
The operators who are paying attention to this now are building an advantage that will compound. The ones who ignore it are going to wonder in two years why their discovery numbers dropped.
What to actually do
Start with your listings. DoorDash, Google Business Profile, Yelp. Make sure your hours are current, your menu is accurate, your photos are real, and your description says something specific about what you are and who you serve. "Family-owned Italian restaurant in Chicago's West Loop specializing in handmade pasta" is infinitely more useful to an AI than "Italian restaurant."
Then look at your website. Does it clearly describe what your restaurant is, where it is, what makes it worth going to? Does it have your menu, your hours, your neighborhood? The more specific and accurate the information, the more useful it is as a source for an AI recommendation engine.
Finally, manage your reviews. The report found that 34% of operators are already updating review responses as part of their AI visibility strategy. Review content is readable by AI tools and factors into how your restaurant gets characterized.
The window is open
Most independent operators aren't thinking about AI search yet. That's the opportunity. The basics, accurate listings, a real website, consistent reviews, are also the foundation of AI visibility. You're not building something new. You're making sure what you already have is working.
Do it now, before everyone else figures it out.
